McKendree Swim and Dive Program: A Decade of Success and Impact
The McKendree Swim and Dive program has reached a significant milestone, surpassing the 10-year mark with remarkable achievements in Lebanon, Illinois. This program, initiated in the 2016-2017 season, has become a force to be reckoned with in the world of college swimming and diving.
Building a Legacy
The hiring of Jimmy Tierney as the head coach was a pivotal moment. With a background in NCAA Division I and the Big Ten Conferences, Tierney's expertise was invaluable. Chuck Brueggemann, the director of athletics, praised Tierney's ability to establish a strong foundation for both men's and women's swimming and diving programs. Brueggemann's vision was clear: McKendree would make a significant impact in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and NCAA Division II competitions.
GLVC Dominance
The Bearcats have certainly lived up to the expectations. In the GLVC conference, they have achieved remarkable success. With 136 GLVC champions, 39 conference records broken, and 39 Swimmer of the Week awards, McKendree has consistently demonstrated their prowess. The team's excellence is further highlighted by the Swimmer of the Year awards, with Gregg Lichinsky (2020) and Fabio Dalu (2021) making their mark. Dalu's achievements extend beyond GLVC, as he became the first freshman to win the GLVC Freshman of the Year award in 2020, joining Vova Gavrysh in this exclusive club.
Andrea Menard-Cordoba, a standout diver, was named Diver of the Year in 2024, adding to the program's accolades. Coach Tierney's leadership has been recognized with two GLVC Coaches of the Year awards in 2018 and 2020, and the team's commitment to sportsmanship is evident through six James R. Spalding Team Sportsmanship awards in the last decade.

With 375 All-Americans, 133 CSCAA Scholar All-Americans, 18 national champions, and 15 runners-up, the Bearcats have proven their ability to compete at the highest level. In the past five years, McKendree has consistently finished in the top four at the national championships, with a notable third-place finish in 2023. Fabio Dalu's excellence was recognized with the National Swimmer of the Year award in 2021, solidifying the program's national standing.
